Top 10 Books that I Wish Were Taught in Schools
*These are in no particular order.
Seeing as my Beyond the Book post yesterday featured a book I wish was required reading in schools, I'm going to go with this topic! Put that together with all the tough issues I've read about this summer and I'm going to rock this topic!
1. Thousand Words by Jennifer Brown: Teaches about sexting in a non-preachy way that I'm sure teens can easily dive into.
2. Golden by Jessi Kirby: It will cause them to think about what they want to do later on in life. I don't want them to be like me, and not starting to think about it until they're 25....
3. The Sky is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson: It will teach them about depression and that they're not the only one in the world who may feel sad and lonely.
4. My Life After Now by Jessica Verdi: It will teach them about HIV. Even I learned somethings when I read it and I thought I know mostly all there is to know about the disease!
5. How to Love by Katie Cotugno: Although this one isn't out until October, I still want to add this. It will teach students about the ever growing issue of teen parenting.
6. A Really Awesome Mess by Brendan Halpin & Trish Cook: This will help teach the teens about addiction as well as eating disorders.
7. Stay by Deb Caletti: It will teach the students about abuse in relationships and how they don't have to take it and let it happen to them.
8. Second Chance Summer by Morgan Matson: Will teach the students about cancer and how to deal with family deaths.
9. The Fault in Our Stars by John Green: It will teach students about cancer and death in their relationships.
10. The Distance Between Us by Kasie West: It will teach the students that it doesn't matter whether you're black, green, purple, or blue, rich or poor, or whatever. If you're in love, then be in love.
Honorable Mention: Percy Jackson series. I LOVE the way it taught ME about mythology, so I'm sure it could teach children as well.
Something Like Normal by Trish Doller: Teaches students about PTSD awareness. (LATE EDITION! CAN'T BELIEVE I FORGOT IT!)
