After serving out a year of hard labor in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin. Her opponents are men-thieves and assassins and warriors from across the empire, each sponsored by a member of the king's council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she'll serve the kingdom for three years and then be granted her freedom.
Celaena finds her training sessions with the captain of the guard, Westfall, challenging and exhilarating. But she's bored stiff by court life. Things get a little more interesting when the prince starts to show interest in her... but it's the gruff Captain Westfall who seems to understand her best.
Then one of the other contestants turns up dead... quickly followed by another.
Can Celaena figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim? As the young assassin investigates, her search leads her to discover a greater destiny than she could possibly have imagined.

*MY THOUGHTS*

I told you all I would read this before the end of 2014 was over! I actually finished it on the last day, but was out of town and couldn't write my review! But I no longer feel left out from the ToG craze. But I can't lie, I was a little underwhelmed about the start to this series.
"Libraries were full of ideas- perhaps the most dangerous and powerful of all weapons."
pg. 56
Don't get me wrong, Maas was an excellent writer. And because I was barely getting my feet wet in the fantasy genre, I think this was a great book to start with since it had boys and a love triangle like all other YA books I've read. But besides that, it got really boring. The beginning was exciting because it was something I was happy about starting and then there was the swords and magic and everything and I thought it was cool. But then there in the middle there was another boy. And then it became obvious that they were fighting for her attention. But then the killings started and they were really cool. But the love triangle overpowered everything. And I just couldn't handle it. But then finally, there was the ending fight scene..... Guys, let me tell you. That was the MOST BAD ASS FIGHT SCENE I'VE EVER READ. It really was the saving grace for this book for me. I read that passage about three times! It really helped to make fantasy grow on me.
"We each survive in our own way."
pg. 122
Now the characters were what made this book for me. Celaena is basically my spirit animal. She reads, she likes sweets, and she's bad ass. I mean how much more like me can you get? lol But really I thought it was really cool how I could connect with her over the reading and the sweets and being boy crazy. Because all of that is me lol But as for the two book boys that I met in this one, I liked Dorian, but he seemed to be using her. Like he only liked her because his father didn't? I'm not sure what I didn't like about him.... I think it was I just didn't like them together. But as for Chaol, he is the strong, silent type and I LOVED his personality. I wish I got to see more of him and her together in this book.
"Nothing is coincidence. Everything has a purpose."
pg. 186
Although it wasn't exactly what I thought it would be about, everyone keeps telling me to get to the next book, so I'm going to continue with the series. Let's hope that this one has more action scenes like the last one in this book! Everyone says things get way better in the next one so let's see. I plan to read book two and three before book four comes out in the fall!
Overall, I give this
