Simmering in Patagonian myth, The Tenth Girl is a gothic psychological thriller with a haunting twist.
At the very southern tip of South America looms an isolated finishing school. Legend has it that the land will curse those who settle there. But for Mavi—a bold Buenos Aires native fleeing the military regime that took her mother—it offers an escape to a new life as a young teacher to Argentina’s elite girls.
Mavi tries to embrace the strangeness of the imposing house—despite warnings not to roam at night, threats from an enigmatic young man, and rumors of mysterious Others. But one of Mavi’s ten students is missing, and when students and teachers alike begin to behave as if possessed, the forces haunting this unholy cliff will no longer be ignored.
One of these spirits holds a secret that could unravel Mavi's existence. In order to survive she must solve a cosmic mystery—and then fight for her life.
*MY THOUGHTS*
This was a weird one. And I like weird so that's ok. The plot was weird, the characters were weirder, and the end was when things got even more weird. But again, for me, it was ok.
This book has two timelines and that made me worry because I'm not a huge fan of historical fiction. But the one that's most recent was the one that stayed with me the most. But the thing that confused me was they never really felt like they came together. It felt like two different stories. But I really liked her writing style anyways.
Her prose was amazing and I found myself tagging so many passages. The dark, gothic atmosphere was really spooky. And trust me when I say, this is spooky. It is kind of long, but the last 150 pages or so gives you one a huge plot twist.
FIERCE READS BOOK TOUR
Last week I had the pleasure of attending the Fierce Reads Fall Book Tour! I had a great time and got some awesome books. I loved the stories the authors told and I loved meeting them and telling them more about where I work and all about Houston.
Fierce Reads brought 4 authors (Sara Faring, Katy Rose Pool, L.L. McKinney, and Margaret Owen) to Houston and I was so grateful. There's hardly large tours like this that come here, so when they do, I try to get there. I was really thankful that the publisher let me know in advance that this was taking place because I got to take some time off and go. And I'm glad I did. Each author had some awesome stories. Especially Sara Faring. Man, that "poison tomato" story and the "cyanide tooth" was pretty cool. (Fun fact, one or both, of those stories can be found in the book too!) It was cool because she seemed so cool, but her book is absolutely wild lol
But as you can see, I loved her stories and I was still really excited to get her book. I even almost helped with finding them somewhere to eat, but I didn't know what side of town they were on. I didn't want to send them all the way across the county because going across Houston definitely means an hour plus of driving lolol But still she's super sweet and I hope you all read and love her book! It's available now!
